Our nation’s capital has a hidden world of free, and cheap, activities for toddlers. Hopefully this list will give you some different things to do with your little one during the week.

To prevent any issues with dates/times being changed, and this page being out of date, I won’t be listing all of the details for these activities. Instead you’ll be directed to the appropriate website for more information.


Giggle and Wriggle with Libraries ACT

Giggle & Wiggle is about learning through language play – using interactive rhymes, songs, games and stories specifically chosen for children aged 0-2 years and their parents.

Cost: Free

Location: Giggle and Wriggle is held in Canberra Libraries throughout the school term.

Day/Time: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, usually at 10.30am depending on the venue.

Story Time with Libraries ACT

Story time is a session full of stories, rhymes and songs suitable for 3-5 year old children and their parents/carers.

Cost: Free

Location: Story Time is held in Canberra Libraries throughout the school term.

Day/Time: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, at 10.30am.

Little Griffins at the National Capital Exhibition

On the last Friday of each month, join us for an hour of Duplo™ fun for pre-schoolers. Our staff will lead the little builders of tomorrow through songs, activities and constructive play. Bookings are not necessary and the program is free. 10 – 11 am.

Cost: Free

Location: Barrine Drive off Commonwealth Avenue, Commonwealth Park.

Day/Time: Last Friday of the month (during school terms), 10.00am

Play Up at the Museum of Australian Democracy

PLAY UP pokes its tongue out at the idea that museums are hands off. This fabulous space allows children to stand up, dress up, make up, think up and step up in a way that has turned the traditional idea of what goes on in museums completely on its head. It is a living and evolving space curated for, with and by children.

Cost: Free (after entry to Old Parliament House)

Location: Old Parliament House, 18 King George Terrace, Parkes

Day/Time: Space is available during usual opening hours.

Story Time at the Australian War Memorial

Hear stories of brave animals, extraordinary people, and faraway places, brought to life through puppets, uniforms, and educational toys. This program is suitable for pre-school-aged children, but older brothers and sisters are also welcome.

Cost: Free

Day/Time: Friday, 10.30am

Little Faces at the National Portrait Gallery

Little children and their parent or carer are invited to join a Learning Facilitator for playful activities in the galleries and studio. Please note that the Summary program will include water play designed for babies and toddlers so please bring a change of clothes. For those who choose not to do water play there will be alternative activities.

For children from 6 months to 3 years. Followed by morning tea in the café.

Little Look at ART at the National Gallery of Australia

Join an NGA guide for an informal tour of the Gallery for parents and carers with babies (ages 0 to 1 year), followed by coffee and muffins.

Cost: $12 child, $10 child members (free for accompanying adults) – this includes coffee and cake!

Day/Time: Various day, 10am to 12pm

stART with ART at the National Gallery of Australia

A morning of exploration and creative fun with art and music. Enjoy art activities inspired by our national collection and an interactive tour for young children, followed by an art-inspired live music concert.

This is for children of all ages – children must be accompanied by an adult.

Cost: $12 child, $10 child members, includes materials (free for accompanying adults)

Location: National Gallery of Australia, King Edward Terrace, Parkes

Day/Time: Various day, 10.30am

Majura Women’s Group, Downer

The Majura Women’s Group is a not for profit that runs from Downer Community Center on Wednesday 9.30-12.30
They do different activities for mums each week from Craft, Jewellery Making to tea tasting and first aid courses. They have a term planned in advance so women can come and go as they please. The Majura Women’s Group offers a place to bring your kids and put them in the adjoining childcare room and have some mummy time or you can keep them with you.

Cost: $5 annual membership, gold coin donation for morning tea and childcare

Location: Downer Community Centre, Frencham Place, Downer

Day/Time: Wednesday, 9.30am to 12.30pm

Free Playgroup, Lollipop Children’s Centre Woden

Lollipop Children’s Centre in Woden provide a free drop-in playgroup every Wednesday from 9.30 to 11,30. There are indoor activities and then free play outside with a huge playground and sandpit.

Cost: Free – just bring along a piece of fruit to share at morning tea
